About Earlobe Repair

Earlobes that have been gradually stretched by wearing heavy jewelry, accidentally torn by earrings, expanded with gauges, or that have become larger and more pendulous with time, can be reconstructed to appear more natural and balanced with a simple surgical procedure. Our board-certified dermatologists at Gateway Aesthetic Institute and Laser Center will utilize a CO2 laser with precision and care to bring your earlobes into better harmony with the rest of your face and allow you to wear jewelry again.

Am I a good candidate for laser earlobe repair?

Earlobes that have been torn by earrings, or that have become more lax with time, can usually be repaired with a simple, straightforward surgical procedure. Gauged ears of any size can be repaired, but the more your skin has been expanded by your gauges, the more complex the reconstruction will be. It may not be possible to fully restore earlobes that have been markedly altered by the presence of large gauges to their original appearance, though it is likely that they can be made to look much better.

What are the advantages of using a laser to repair my earlobes?

Our board-certified dermatologists—all of whom are highly skilled skin surgeons—use a CO2 laser instead of a conventional scalpel to perform earlobe repair surgery. The advantage of the CO2 laser is that it uses a very precisely focused beam of energy to incise the tissue of your ear, while simultaneously controlling any associated bleeding. The CO2 laser facilitates a clean and well-visualized surgical field during your procedure, while also minimizing bruising and other bleeding complications in the post-procedural period. The earlobe is very a small anatomic area with no room for error—you’ll want not only a highly skilled surgeon but also the most advanced technology to ensure that your earlobes are reconstructed with precision and care.

How long does laser earlobe repair take?

Depending on the complexity of the repair required, as well as whether you are looking to have one or both ears treated on the same day, the procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to more than an hour.

Is laser earlobe repair painful?

Local anesthesia is used to ensure that your treatment is pain free. On the days following your surgery, pain can easily be managed with over-the-counter analgesics if needed.

What is recovery like after laser earlobe repair?

In the days immediately following your surgery, you will notice that your earlobes may appear slightly swollen and somewhat red. This redness and swelling will gradually improve by the time your sutures are removed around 1 week after your procedure. While your sutures are still in, you should follow the wound care instructions provided to you by your physician, sleep on your back, avoid touching your ears, avoid wearing headphones, and take all other necessary precautions to prevent infection or trauma to the ears as they are healing. At 7-10 days following surgery, you will likely be able to resume all your normal activities.
