Acne Treatment

About Acne Treatments

Acne is a skin disease that affects millions of Americans every year (most typically teenagers). It can vary from mild to extremely severe.

While some people find success controlling their acne with topical creams and lotions, others turn to oral medications. Unfortunately, many of today’s most popular acne drugs also come with undesired side effects.

There is no reason to worry. With advancements in lasers, light, and phototherapy treatments, you have more options today to control acne than ever before.

If you are fighting acne and feel like you’re losing the battle, give us a call to discuss several treatment options which may be effective for you.

Questions? We can help!

What acne treatments do you offer at the Gateway Aesthetic Institute?

While we try to prescribe the simplest and most effective acne treatment possible, you can rest assured that we have every acne therapy option available at our disposal to help you achieve superior results. We can prescribe all acne fighting medications (including Accutane), but also offer exceptional alternatives.

I’ve heard acne drugs have side effects, and the creams I’ve tried haven’t worked. Tell me about other options.

There are several. Here is some information on the most popular and effective treatments.

Activated light facial
Activated light facial treatment, also called photodynamic acne therapy, requires the use of a prescription lotion that is applied to the surface of the skin, allowed to soak for approximately 30 minutes, and then exposed to an Omnilux blue light to activate the chemical. Our experience shows that activated light facial treatments work as well as the popular drug Accutane, but without the difficult side effects. Activated light facial treatments are so safe they are even recommended for those who are pregnant. Most patients require a minimum of three office treatments, a month apart, to achieve maximum improvement.

Omnilux light treatment
For a less aggressive treatment option, we offer Omnilux light treatments (also called blue light & red light therapy). Omnilux is an FDA approved, advanced therapy that uses safe alternating red and blue light (no ultraviolet), to effectively treat and prevent acne lesions. The blue wavelength light of the Omnilux kills the acne-causing bacteria on the skin, while the red wavelength light reduces inflammation and revitalizes the skin. Alternate blue and red light treatments, performed two to three times per week for 12 consecutive treatments, have been shown in research trials to improve acne by as much as 81 percent within three months of the final treatment. Omnilux is ideal for both teens and adults. Treatments are quick, painless, noninvasive, and affordable. Best of all, there are no side effects.

Laser treatment
In addition to Omnilux and activated light facial treatments, we offer multiple laser treatments for acne that inhibit the production of oil, kill bacteria, reduce vascular inflammation and improve the appearance of acne scars. The appropriate laser and treatment therapy would vary with each individual case.

Do these treatments permanently stop acne?

Many patients find long-term remission. However, everyone’s skin is different and no treatment is foolproof. We offer treatments that represent effective, long-awaited relief to hundreds of patients. In fact, the Gateway Aesthetic Institute & Laser Center is a major referral center for patients who have failed to see results at other dermatologist offices. If you are bothered by acne that has not responded to other treatments, or if you would simply like to avoid the side effects of internal drugs and antibiotics, call now to make an appointment.

What if I have acne scars?

If you have minor acne scars, you may want to try microdermabrasion. If your scars are more deep or severe, check out our fact sheet on scar treatment for some of the most effective options. A consultation with one of our dermatologists will help you find the treatment best suited to your needs.
