Melasma, commonly known as the “mask of pregnancy,” is a skin discoloration found on the cheeks, around the eyes and sometimes on the forehead or above the lip. While it is a condition common in pregnant women and women who take oral contraceptives, 10% of cases are men.
Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes which may make the skin more likely to develop dark patches of pigment when exposed to sunlight.
The daily use of sunscreen not only helps prevent melasma, but its use is also crucial in the prevention of skin cancer.
While Melasma is not dangerous, it can be a concern to those with the condition. At the Gateway Aesthetic Institute & Laser Center, we offer several treatment options, including fractional lasers.
