Melasma, commonly known as the “mask of pregnancy,” is a skin discoloration found on the cheeks, around the eyes and sometimes on the forehead or above the lip. While it is a condition common in pregnant women and women who take oral contraceptives, 10% of cases are men.
Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes which may make the skin more likely to develop dark patches of pigment when exposed to sunlight.
While it is not dangerous, it can be a concern to those with the condition. At the Gateway Aesthetic Institute & Laser Center, we offer several treatment options. Give us a call today to discuss how we can help.
New treatments for melasma include fractional lasers, and an exciting new product that can be used at home called the Cosmion Mask. This product was developed by Dr. Taylor. Click here for a video about the Cosmion Mask.
